THE THREE HARES MYSTERY

                                                  THE THREE HARES MYSTERY

THE THREE HARES CAME RUNNING JOINED BY THEIR EARS SPUN ON THE SILK
ROUTE FROM ANCIENT TIMES WITH A SECRET MEANING FROM A PAST BELIEF
THEIR IMAGE TRANSLATED IN NUMEROUS WAYS STEEPED IN HISTORY A SYMBOL
OF MYSTERY OF LOVE AND ETERNITY A HIDDEN TREASURE FOR US TO DISCOVER

This painting of Three Hares has a lot of meaning. I wrote the poem about the mystery of this
Symbol and how it is thought to have been brought to England on the Silk Route or trade route from where it was first discovered in Buddhist caves in China dating back to 581AD. How its meaning is still a mystery but has been translated in many ways to fit various religious beliefs and how we find it continually fascinating.

I have painted the Hares to look as if they are spinning through time and space on their orbit to various parts of the world. The poem I have written to look as if it is on a ribbon of silk thus referring to the silk route. The moon I have painted to celebrate the wonderful Lunar Eclipse that we had at the time I was painting this picture and was lucky enough to see on the 27/28th of Sept 2015. The moon being a Supermoon at the time of the eclipse, this is one which is a full moon at its closest elliptical orbit to the earth making it look much larger and was also exceptional in appearing a beautiful red colour.
The background I have painted to look like the earth around the moon where the three hares have been travelling through space and time. In the sky I have painted all the constellations of the Zodiac star signs in white with all the other stars being in a pale blue.
This is my latest Three Hares oil painting, the original picture does not have the names of star signs written on it.

Hare Carving

I came across this beautiful ancient carving of a Hare on a pew in the Church of St Newlina, in St Newlyn East in Cornwall yesterday. It was quite dark in the church and quite by chance I put my hand on this very carving which has been worn smooth over the many years it has sat there. The church dates back to Norman times but I am not sure when the carvings were done.

MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT STARLIGHT HARES

The latest of my Three Hares paintings is now framed and hanging in my gallery. The poem around the heart reads:- Midnight moonlight starlight hares
Forever running joined by their ears
Your meaning is hidden lost in time
An ancient symbol of things divine

Devon's Nature in Art

This is my symbol of the three hares created for my Devon's Nature in Art website, although based on the ancient symbol this is entirely unique. I have painted the border to look as if it was made from the lichen covered granite of Dartmoor and behind the three hares I have painted four scenes depicting the seasons. Winter is the ancient granite cross on Week down. Spring is a view of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Summer is the heather clad Prestonbury Hill Fort above Fingle Bridge and Autumn is a view towards Haytor.

The Mystery of the Three Hares

A new little oil painting of mine, all about the mystery of the Three Hares. The little verse I have written around the painting reads.  The stars dust you in their mystery
Your meaning lost in the depths of history
Your image through artist's eyes evolved
                                         Your sectrets will remain unsolved.

ETERNITY

Here is my latest oil painting of the Three Hares, I have called it "Eternity" because I think this is a good interpretation of the meaning of this symbol, and around the heart I have written a little verse to go with my painting.

Snowdrops

It is lovely to see the first snowdrops of spring, these are in the graveyard at Sampford Courtenay. The beautiful church is on my Three Hares Trail and it has two fine roof bosses of the hares as well as may other interesting bosses, it is well worth a visit.

"ETERNITY" Mugs

I now have these lovely "Eternity" mugs with my design and poem on them. The poem reads
In black and white for all to see
Moon hares running, running free
Joined by their ears for eternity
Appearing as six but only three
I also have the original Watercolour framed and on display in my gallery Ludgate Fine Art in Chagford plus some smaller prints.
