Three Hares at Gwithian Towans

Another visit to see the beautifully carved sign to Gwithian Towans near Hayle in Cornwall. It has aged beautifully since my last visit when it had none of the yellow lichen on it.

THREE HARES of DARTMOOR

This is a small watercolour I did of this brilliant image painted to look as if the hares are made from Dartmoor granite. It is now framed and will soon be on display in my lovely Three Hares Gallery in Chagford and also on my website https://www.devonsnatureinart.com

THE THREE HARES SYMBOL

Here is a new painting and poem that I have just finished. Over the past sixteen years I have been inspired to paint the Three Hares image so many times and in so many ways, its meaning is always a bit of a mystery and can lead to so many interesting paths of conjecture. The poem I have written as part of this painting is

Upon the moon the three hares run - A meaningful symbol of ancient times - When man once worshipped the rising sun - And the moon and starts were important signs - Of eternity and rebirth and life to come

Do take a look through my other posts on this blog if you are interested in this mythical image and also my website www.devonsnatureinart.com

I have just been informed about this new Three Hares sculpture in this lovely wooden archway in Banbury in Oxfordshire, this is created by Philip Bews & Diane Gorvin. Here is a bit about it :- This is the second standalone sculpture of the 'Settlement' series, on ground overlying a deserted medieval village. Green oak boughs form a 'Cruck Arch' with a medieval woman's head at the apex. Three bronze hares are fixed into the arch beams and there are two carved bird corbels. On the collar beam is a quote from the Banbury Shepherd and a bronze shoe which historically was incorporated into buildings for good fortune. On the main arch boughs is carved the orientation – W. Two collars around the arch supports feature medieval tile patterns. The arch links to seating with a cat and mouse carved into the post and seat back. On the back of the seat is a carved relief showing medieval pottery, ale, cakes and Banbury cheese.

This brilliant image is certainly spreading, and will soon be as prolific as these wonderful animals!

THE GOLDEN THREE HARES

This is my very latest painting of this magical subject, I have lost count of how many times I have now painted the THREE HARES in so many different ways and styles. This painting I finished during the very last days of 2024. I wonder how many times I shall be painting more hares in 2025! With very best wishes to you all, Eleanor xx

THREE HARES, NORTH BOVEY

I am still finding new carvings of the Three Hares, my latest find was one carved on a gravestone in the churchyard of St John the Baptists Church in North Bovey. The church is one on my trail as it has a lovely three hares boss in its ceiling painted in ted, gold and blue. I had not noticed the one carved on the gravestone till I went there recently. I have put some photo's of it on my Facebook page.

I am constantly surprised by the spread of the Three Hares Symbol which keeps popping up all over the world. Here is a fireplace that was made recently for a couple who have a house in Charleston in South Carolina and wanted the Three Hares placed in a shield on their mantle piece. This has been carved in Limestone for them by the famous stone carver Simeon Warren  https://www.simeonawarren.space/ . This picture shows it before it was installed in their house. They told me all about it when they visited my gallery in Chagford this week.

TRIQUETRA THREE HARES

This is my latest Three Hares Painting. It is an oil painting with gold paint. This has quite a lot of spiritual meaning and a poem written around it which reads

The power of three is here to see, No beginning, no end, eternity. An ancient symbol of everlasting protection, Life, death and rebirth. Continuation.

In the night sky amongst the stars you can find the constellation of Leo, top left. Taurus, top right. Cassiopeia, bottom left and The Plough, bottom right.

I hope you like it.

HUNTING HARES

Here is my latest painting of a hare, as you see, I love painting hare’s although there are not many on Dartmoor, but if you know where to look you may be lucky enough to see one.

We do however have plenty of the Three Hares images in and around Dartmoor, in fact, more than anywhere else in the world. There are quite a few to be found in Chagford where I live and have my Three Hares Gallery.

Hunting the Three Hares has become quite an obsession with many people coming here in search of this amazing image, and some come from other countries miles away!

If you wish to find out more about this and my Three Hares Trail, then click on this link  https://www.devonsnatureinart.com/page/8968/about-the-three-hares-symbol-and-trail

If you would like to see more of my paintings of hares, then do have a look at my website, or if possible visit my Three Hares Gallery in Chagford on Dartmoor.    https://www.devonsnatureinart.com/

Welcome Back Trees & Hares in Threes

I am sure anyone who drives down to Cornwall on the A30 will recognise these trees, they are often named the welcome home or nearly there trees. I have used both gold and silver paint in this picture which is my latest painting and if you could see it for real you would love the way that the paint really sings out, I have added the three golden hares as these are my thing and considered lucky by many.

Green Three Hares Labyrinth

Inspired by a recent visit to the Rocky Valley near Tintagel in Cornwall where there are two Labyrinths carved into the rock face behind the ruined mill which stands beside the pretty Trevillet river, just a short distance inland from the coast path. I have painted this with the three hares in the centre as I can see a link between the Three Hares and the Circle of Life and the fascinating history about Labynths which can be found all over the world as can the Three Hares symbol.

This painting has many layers of paint to build up the depth so you can actually trace the passage that leads you to the centre, it also has many shades of green and on top of this flecks of gold.

It is now framed and can be seen hanging in my Three Hares Gallery in Chagford on Dartmoor

Three Hares Print with Star Signs

The three hares came running joined by their ears

Spun on the silk route from ancient times

With a secret meaning from a past belief

Their image translated in numerous ways

Steeped in history a symbol of mystery

Of love and eternity a hidden treasure

For us to discover

This painting and poem were inspired by the mystery surrounding this amazing ancient image of the Three Hares and how it is thought to have been brought over to England by traders using the Silk Route.

I have painted the Three Hares as if they were magically transported along the silk route floating through the night sky with their ears joined in the middle forming a triangle as they are depicted in nearly all the many Three Hares symbols that can be found from China to the many countries across the world where this image has been carved, painted and copied in many different ways.

The poem that I have written to go with this painting sits on a ribbon that I have painted to look like silk. There is a wonderful blood red full moon in the centre of the painting surrounded by stars which include all the twelve star sign constellations.

In this limited edition print of only 500 I have added the star signs in writing onto the night sky.

If you would like a print, please look at my websites, www.threeharesgalleryshop.co.uk

Three Hares Bosses

These are two tiny oil paintings that I have just finishes and framed ready to hang in my Three Hares Gallery in Chagford. They are copies of the two carved bosses of this image that can be found in the roof of St Michael's Church which I can see from my gallery. These images fascinate me, especially the different ways each artist carves or paints them, all being so different.

BRENTOR

It was suggested to me that I did a painting of the iconic Brentor Church together with the Three Hares image, and although this church does not actually have this carving I thought it a nice idea. The church of St Michael de Rupe is 12th century and sits on top of the Tor with wonderful views all around and can also be seen from most of the higher points on Dartmoor. It is a magical place to visit! This painting is now framed in a beautiful blue and gold frame which compliments it perfectly. I have just added it it to a new section in on my website www.devonsnatureinart.com in the "Mythical Paintings" section, or if you would like to see the painting for real, do pop along to my Three Hares Gallery in Chagford on Dartmoor.

THE SPIRIT OF HARES

It has been a tough few months with such a change to our lives through this very frightening time of Covid19. This is one of the paintings I have been working on during this time and it is now finished, framed and hanging in my Three Hares Gallery in Chagford on Dartmoor. I am hoping we should be open again properly in July and ready to welcome back plenty of visitors. If you would like to see more of my paintings before then, please look at my website www.devonsnatureinart.com    thank you, Eleanor.

SENTINEL HARES

This is my latest Three Hares painting, it is an oil on board. I thought I would try something different from the usual running three hares and have placed these sitting guarding the world. The poem I have written around them reads

One ear or two
Two ears or three
Look very carefully
And what do you see?
Eternity or divinity
Love or infinity
Rebirth and mystery
Or the Holy Trinity
Something or nothing
Nothing or something
Forever or never
But oh so clever!
